Sugar, Fat and Salt Sells... What a Waist!

Is that all there is? I have been thinking a lot about the Canadian diet lately and how disappointing we are as a nation of eaters.. I guess I always thought we were better than the USA in this department, somehow healthier, more active, the great outdoors and all. Recently I heard that we have an equal if not higher percentage of obese citizens as the USA, as much as 78% of our total population, a rather humbling statistic.

That same day at my fitness club it really hit home as I was subjected to Sports channel commercials selling food based on 3 items only... fat, sugar, and salt (not to mention the chemicals).

As I laboured through the miles on my stationary bike, commercial after commercial promoted disgusting "food"... greasy stuffed pizza, deep fried chicken, burgers laden with bacon, cheese and fatty meat! Ok, I know that the advertisers are trying to appeal to the non-salad eating macho males watching sports with their buddies but does this middle age couch potato need a 2,000 calorie snack? Surely the athletes these people are watching whip around the ice,or sprint down a soccer field aren't eating food like this or how could they perform as they do? It all seems a bit hypocritical doesn't it?

In our world of excesses, where more is better; all you can eat, buffets, and super sized foods...is there really a case for anyone indulging in a diet based on sugar, fat and salt ? Our healthcare system will not support this behaviour much longer before we simply run out of money and you, I and the couch potato are going to pay big time!

On a channel where we are watching athletes perform, could we not use this opportunity to promote how the average person can perform better by eating a healthier diet? Maybe I'm "out to lunch" on this one but at least I'm having a salad (with dressing on the side)...
